Make Your Website Sell

Make Your Website Sell By Chris Mole

Thousands of new websites are springing up every week. The owners of these sites are full of optimism that their venture into e-commerce will transform their business by bringing in new customers and boosting their sales.

But the reality is that most websites fail abysmally as sales tools. Why? Because the owners of these sites have spent a lot of money creating fancy graphics but have paid little attention to the words on the site. And it’s the words on websites that sell. Your fancy graphics might entertain your potential customers but they won’t make the sale.

Take a look at many of the websites out there in cyberspace. They are full of spelling mistakes, poor grammar and cumbersome text that makes you want to do only one thing … click your mouse button and move to something else.

Small and medium businesses are particularly guilty of this. The words appear to be an after-thought, hurriedly cobbled together to fill the space between the images.

One of America’s e-commerce gurus, Ken Evoy, believes 90 percent of websites are failing to “get the order” from potential customers browsing the web, because they are badly written, or written in the wrong style.

“Remember, people use the Net to find information. And information is contained in words, not graphics,” Evoy says.

“Let’s face it, there’s some pretty cool stuff on the web, and it’s fun to play with. But don’t be tempted. Your sales site can’t be self-indulgent. You have to think customer every step of the way. Customers want information.

“Compelling text is 1000 percent more important than fancy design. After all, if a fancy page has no substance, it delivers no value.”

Web selling also has two important features to consider. First, the customer sought you out. This is a big positive. Second, there are thousands of other companies on the web competing for your customer’s business. And since you are a ‘virtual vendor’, the customer can click you away in a second … without even feeling bad about it. This is a huge negative.

When you think about selling on the web, keep these two points clearly in mind. You have a potential customer browsing your site, finger poised over their mouse. One click and they’re gone.

So what should an effective website look like? First, keep it simple. It may be nice to have moving images to greet the customer when they enter the site, but make sure it doesn’t take too long to load. Otherwise the customer will get impatient and … click … they’re gone.

All your site really needs is to be clean, simple and well-structured. It doesn’t have to be fancy. It doesn’t have to be complicated. And it doesn’t have to be expensive.

That’s not to say your site shouldn’t look professional. It’s your store front - a reflection of your business and the quality of your product - so it has to convey the image you want to present to the world. But a clean, simple site can do that. Some of world’s biggest “e-tailers” like Amazon.com, and Barnes and Noble, have very simple logos.

So let’s get back to the key to a successful website - the words. If you want to write the copy yourself, think carefully about the purpose of the text. You are writing sales copy. And the secret of all successful sales copy is to think like your customer.

To quote Ken Evoy again: “Web selling is about selling one customer at a time … one-to-one selling … you and the customer talking together about their needs and wants.”

Most people make the mistake of writing their websites for themselves. They tell how wonderful their company is, how long it’s been in business and technical details about the products they offer. But the customer doesn’t want to know about you and your company. The customer is interested in one thing … “what’s in it for me?”

So focus on the benefits of your product or service. After every sentence you write, see yourself as your customer and ask the question: “so what?”.

For example, let’s imagine you are selling a new email filter that keeps spam out of people’s mailboxes. Don’t bore your potential customer with the technical details. Focus on the benefits of having such a filter. For example, you might say something like: “Do you waste valuable time dealing with junk email every day? Ban-It Mail Filter is the answer to your problem. Ban-it is the most effective filter available to keep spam out of your mailbox and put back more time into your day.”

You are selling benefits - not features. Even experienced copywriters sometimes get the two mixed up.

You need to have a clear picture in your mind of the customer you are writing for. Write as if you were sitting in a chair opposite them and talking face to face. And tell them what your product or service can do for them.

That in a nutshell is the secret of writing copy for the Web.

If you can do this, the potential of web selling is enormous. It outranks Gutenburg’s printing press, Marconi’s wireless and Bell’s telephone all rolled together.

So don’t waste the fantastic opportunity presented by cyber-marketing. Make sure your website copy is doing the job you want it to. If you don’t feel competent to write it yourself, hire a professional copywriter. The investment will repay itself many times over.

Promoting in Online Forums

Forums can be a useful tool if you`re doing business online. You can learn a lot by reading the content and actively taking part in the discussions. Reading a forum’s archives can be a great way to get a basic knowledge about a topic, and it can also give you pointers about the changes in trends and opinions through time.

It is always very important to read the terms and conditions of each particular forum for a basic guideline as to what is acceptable. It`s also a good idea to read archived posts in order to see the guidelines in action. If you don`t, you could end up doing something wrong, like spamming the forum, and that could seriously hurt both your name and your business.

Taking an active part in forums can help you gain recognition in topics you show some knowledge of, and may even result in some great business leads and contacts. Read through posts, and answer any questions you are able to in a polite, friendly and helpful manner. It`s a brilliant way to get your name and services known, but you have to be aware that different forums have different rules in regards to self-promotion.

Some won`t allow any hint of self-promotion, some are specifically aimed at self-promotion, and a lot of them fall somewhere in between, allowing either signature files or URL’s to an off-the-page member profile. The in-between ones are the best ones to use for marketing yourself, especially as the ones aimed at promoting usually end up more like “spam boards” than anything else.

See if you can choose forums that allow a sig file, which is basically a short block of text about you and/or your services which can be automatically attached to the end of every post you make. No matter what you do, never EVER post a reply to a ‘legitimate’ topic with nothing but spam in the body of your post. This will annoy forum members who are seeking valid answers, and kill your credibility as an online marketer almost instantly.

“Netiquette” is a must-have if you`re planning to use forums. What is netiquette, you ask? Basically the same as offline etiquette. It is essential to have a good understanding of acceptable ways to communicate with other forum members. That`s why it`s so important to do a LOT of reading in the forums before you start posting messages yourself.

This is where good moderators come into play. They check the forums for inappropriate posts and spam, they keep the boards clean, and make sure everybody plays by the rules. Forums without moderators tend to turn into ghost-towns, with nothing but spam bots visiting them. A nice clean board needs good moderators to keep it that way.

In the worst-case scenario, if you break the rules in a forum, by maybe spamming, or using inappropriate language or behaviour, either the administrators or moderators may well end up banning you from that particular forum. If that happens, they will most likely delete each and every post you`ve made, whether it`s good or bad.

Happy Visiting and Posting.

Play Deuces Wild Video Poker Tips To Win

When you play Deuces Wild you are playing one of the most excting and popular video poker games and it’s suitable for both novice and experienced players

Its fun playing Deuces Wild video poker and the chances of winning are good if you follow the tips below.

    Play Deuces Wild an Introduction

In all Video Poker games, only the ranking of the hands is the same as in table poker.

When you play Deuces Wild video poker your aim is to get the best-paying hand.

When playing Deuces Wild video poker the machine deals you a five-card hand.

You can hold or throw away as many cards as you like by pressing the appropriate button underneath every card.

After selecting your card(s) that you want to discard hit the deal button - you then get new cards to replace the ones you have just discarded.

If the new hand contains a winning combination, you receive a payout and win .

The main point to keep in mind when playing Deuces Wild, is that the four two’s, (deuces), can be substituted for any card in the deck.

It is this that makes deuces wild video poker such a fun game.

The Ranking for the Hands - Starting on order with the Highest Are:

    1. Five of a Kind

    2. Royal Flush

    3. Straight Flush
    4. Four of a Kind
    5. Full House
    6. Flush
    7. Straight
    8. Three of a Kind
    9. Two Pair
    10. A Pair

Keep in mind, Five of a Kind is only possible when using a Joker or Wild Cards and gives the best hand of all.

Basic Deuces Wild Strategy for the Standard Game:

Four Deuces - Hold all five cards, you can’t improve on this hand!

Three Deuces - Keep a wild royal flush and five-of-a-kind. If you don’t have these hold the deuces only.

Two Deuces - Keep any hand that’s four-of-a-kind or better. Keep any four cards to a royal flush, or fi you don’t have these cards you should keep the two deuces.

One Deuce - Keep all paying hands, with the exception of four cards to a royal flush.

Keep four cards to a straight flush, three cards to a royal flush. Otherwise, just keep the deuce.

No Deuce in your hand then:

Keep all paying hands, except hold four cards to a royal flush, instead of a lesser paying hand.

    Keep a four-card straight flush.

    Keep a three-card to a royal flush.

Keep any one pair (keep two pair only if full house pays the same as four-of-a-kind).

    Keep a four-card flush.

    Keep a consecutive four-card straight.

Keep three cards to a straight flush.

Keep any 2 of the following 10, J, Q, or K, providing they’re in the same suit.

If you don’t hold any of the above combinations then simply take five new cards.

Most players don’t like giving back 5 cards but if you do the odds of winning when playing Deuces Wild are increased.

    Keep in mind

Always play the maximum coins per game, as the payout for five coins played is far greater than five times the payout for one coin.

Play at deuces Wild machines that offer full-pay Deuces Wild. This means the pay schedules of 9/5 (9 coins for a straight flush and 5 for 4 of a kind under the one coin payout schedule) There are other pay schedules but they reduce your chances of winning so when playing deuces wild stick with the high paying machines.

Play Deuces Wild for BIG Winnings!

Playing Deuces wild is now very popular and only Jacks Or Better is more popular and this very much down to the excitement and fun the game offers but something more is on offer. If you play Deuces Wild correctly you can gain an edge over the house and bank some serious winnings.
Many players do this when playing Deuces Wild and follow the tips above and you can do - enjoy the game.

Negotiating to Buy a New Car the Easy Way

Do you hate the thought of buying a new car because of the struggle you have to go through negotiating with the dealership? Relax. Negotiating to buy a new car is easy. Sure their sales people receive negotiation training, but you have the upper hand. Why? Because you can easily find out everything that they want to keep hidden. Information is the key to winning any negotiation. If you use the resources and approaches outlined below, you will negotiate the lowest possible price and drive away with a great new car.

First Find Out What the Dealer Paid for the Car

The true dealer cost is made up of two components - the Dealer Invoice less the Holdback.

    • What the dealer actually paid for the vehicle is the Dealer Invoice. There are a number of good on-line sources for this including Kelly Blue Book (KBB.com) and Edmunds.com. (Be aware that the invoice may include an advertising charge for joint advertising campaigns. It is a real per car cost to the dealer, i.e. it is not overhead since it is paid only when a car is sold. It does show up on the invoice that the dealer gets from the manufacture, but it is not found on the online sites that give you dealer cost. It tends to run around $300-400.)

    • The Holdback is the second component of true dealer cost. The holdback is a rebate that is paid directly to the dealer by the manufacturer for each car sold. Holdbacks for Chrysler, Ford and GM are 3% of the total price of the car. Holdbacks for foreign makes are 2%-3% depending on the manufacturer. Edmunds has a good Data Base of these.

Add In the Hidden Incentives to the Dealer and the Advertised Rebates

    • Dealer Incentives: Surprise! In addition to the holdback there may be other hidden incentives to the dealer that you can only get if you know they are there. Otherwise the dealer keeps the incentive.

    • Rebates: There may also be ‘Cash Back’ advertised rebates which they must give to you if you buy the car. (However, you need to know what the rebate is in advance since it will effect your opening offer to the dealer.)

These rebates change from month to month so you need current information. A good source for hidden incentives is CarDeals, published by the Center for the Study of Services. Call (800) 475-7283 and for a few dollars they will mail/fax you the most recent copy. Edmunds also has a good information set for both advertised and hidden rebates (which they call marketing support).

    Determine Final Dealer Cost

Let’s say that you have decided on a ‘Roadster Supreme’ with a sticker price, including all options and delivery, of $23,000. Your research comes up with the following information:

    Dealer cost $20,000
    Advertising charge 400
    Holdback - 3% of MSRP -600
    Hidden incentive -1,000
    Actual dealer cost $18,800

Making the Offer to the Dealer

So what do you offer the dealer? My experience is that in general the dealer’s bottom line will be a 3% profit, which in this case would be $600 or a final sales price of $19,400. You could start at $18,800, and work your way up or you could start at $19,400 and just sit there.

    Hardball Dealer Negotiating Tactics

    • Authority Limits: This is the standard ploy where the salesperson says, ‘I’ll have to go ask the sales manager.’ One way to handle this is to simply treat the salesperson as a messenger. Or you might play the broken record game, repeating your initial offer and telling the sales representative to ‘go talk to the manager.’

    • Keeping You Waiting: It’s a common tactic to keep the buyer waiting, hoping that it will make him or her anxious and nervous. The counter to this is to be totally prepared, bring a book or some work to do, or make some phone calls on your cell phone. This shows that you are totally relaxed and unconcerned and will not be affected by their waiting game. One person I know brings an alarm and tells the salesperson that they have an hour to close this deal or she’s leaving.

    • The Offer Check: Some dealerships demand that you give them a check to show your ‘good faith.’ This is ludicrous. If they tell you that they won’t negotiate unless you give them a check, get up and head for the door. Their policy will change fast.

    • Lowball/Bait and Switch: The idea is to quote you an unusually low price over the phone (or in an ad) to get you into the dealership and then, when you get to there, the salesperson says that the sales manager wouldn’t accept the price or the salesperson ‘discovers’ that he left out a thousand dollar option package or that you don’t qualify for all the rebates in the ad. If you know your pricing, you should be able to spot the lowball right away. Deals that are too good to be true are always bait and switch.

    Other Issues

    • Add-ons You Should Not Buy: There are a number of items that some dealerships try to sell that you absolutely do not need. These can include undercoating, which can even damage the car; Scotchguarding, which you can do yourself for a few dollars; paint sealant and preparation charges (The factory pays the dealer for preparation).

    • Extended Warranties: An extended warranty is insurance. We generally buy insurance for risks that we cannot tolerate. We accept a $500 collision insurance deductible because we can tolerate the risk of a $500 loss. Are auto repairs, once the car comes out of warranty, an expense you feel you cannot tolerate?

    • Selling Your Used Car: You will almost always get a better price if you sell your used car yourself. The advantage of selling to the dealer is that you don’t have the hassle, and in most states you only pay sales tax on the net amount that you actually pay to the dealership.

Unfortunately, every used car is different and every market is different. Both Edmunds and Kelly have good pricing information. You will discover variations in what they say your car is worth, but they will proved some guidance.

Think through your used car negotiation strategy before you go into the dealership. You might want to get an offer on the used car first, and then go on to the new car because, once they recognizes just how serious you are about getting a rock bottom price for the new car, they may become extremely stubborn on the used car price.

    Putting It All Together

The bottom line is relax. Let all their tactics roll off you like water off a duck’s back. It may take an hour or so for them to become convinced that to sell you a car they will have to drop to their bottom line, but eventually they will give in. You will get a great price and drive away with that wonderful new car. Enjoy!

Low Carb Diet - What Are Low Carb Diets

What is a low carb diet? Well, it doesn’t take a scientific mind to realize that people, and Americans especially, have difficulty choosing the right foods and an adequate quantity of those foods. To put it lightly, our diets are awful. We are obese with elevated cholesterol levels and blood pressure, and are crippled by arthritis and cancer. Although many maladies are dependent on one’s genetic makeup and can hardly be avoided, a lot can be said for eating wholesome foods to help fortify your body.

One of the most popular diets on the market these days are the low carb diets, such as Atkins, South Beach, or the Zone. Low carb diets typically advocate portion control and a concept called insulin control. When one eats a highly refined, sugary twinkie, the bloodstream is inundated with glucose within 7 minutes and not too much later, the pancreas releases excessive amounts of insulin to transport the blood glucose to where it needs to go. This causes your blood sugar levels to plummet and for the excess glucose to be stored as fat. This, of course, leads to obesity and heart disease.

So, instead of eating processed, sugary foods, one needs to eat what are called “complex carbohydrates”. These cause a more gradual climb in blood sugar levels and therefore provide more energy that lasts longer. This ingrained pattern of eating junk food out of laziness is what the low carb diets are trying to get rid of. Instead, they are advocating an restriction on starchy pastas, potatoes, and breads, while advocating an increased consumption of good protein sources and fresh vegetables and fruits. According to research, by ingesting more protein, one’s metabolism has to work harder to break it down for use as energy, thus raising the metabolic rate. So, not only will you be burning more calories, but by limiting the intake of starchy carbs, one is protecting themselves from the complications of type II diabetes. So, low carb, high protein diets seem to make sense but is there scientific merit to their claims?

Yes, when one lowers their intake of starchier and more refined carbs, there are numerous health benefits that come with the territory. First of all, research has proven that people can lose substantial weight on a low carb diet without restricting calories. Low carb, high protein diets can help lower triglyceride levels, increase HDL cholesterol levels, reduce blood glucose levels for diabetics as well as non-diabtetics, improve insulin sensitivity, lower blood pressure, improve concentration due to regulated blood glucose levels, and lower blood insulin levels. Others have made unsubstantiated claims that low carb, high protein diets left them with fewer headaches, lessened PMS symptoms, healthier looking skin, and even better joint motion.

There is a lot to be said for low carb diets, but if this sounds like the plan to help initiate your path to weight loss, consult your physician or a dietitian before setting out on a diet that, if misunderstood, could certainly be life threatening. Good luck.

What Gals Really Want For Christmas!

Okay, guys: listen up! I am here to tell you what women want for Christmas. You probably already know it, but you don’t understand it. What am I saying? Well, those little ads that have been mysteriously popping up on your dresser, on your workbench, or plastered to the windshield of your truck did not get there by accident. Somebody who wants you to pay close attention to what she really wants put it there. You don’t think the wind blew it there do you? Oh, please! Let’s go down the list and find out what your lady really wants for Christmas. I abbreviated everything for clarity and to be concise. That means the 27 items she really wants are condensed to just five. Get it?

    1. Jewelry - You had to ask? What woman doesn’t want something shiny to wear on her fingers, around her neck, her wrist, her anklet, her belly button…Okay, I’m not talking custom jewelry either. I’m talking about something that will retain its shine in all weather conditions and can be counted in the number of karats it possesses. You can count on it setting you back at least through the following June, probably as late as Thanksgiving…

    2. Chocolate - Milk chocolate just doesn’t cut it, fellas. Better for you to pick it up by the brand: Peregina, Godiva, and Richart are a few that come to mind. Yeah, get her the little stocking stuffer Santa chocolates too. She’ll think that you are being real sweet!

    3. To the Islands! Okay, time to splurge. Go all out and book that early February vacation to Paradise. You know you will need it by time that the 17th measurable snowstorm plasters your driveway. Oh, by the way, no matter how much she thinks that the kids should come along, make arrangements with your parents to come and spend the week at your house. If the kiddies come down with the flu at least they will be in a familiar environment with adults who will spoil them rotten!

    4. Spa Membership - This one gets tricky. If you give her a spa membership, she will say that you think she is getting fat/old/wrinkly, etc. You’re walking in dangerous territory, men! Better yet, make sure that it is a place where her friends already hang out. Tell her you want her to have regular quality time with her girlfriends. She won’t buy your pitch, but she’ll join especially when you present her with the other gift that she wants: chocolate.

    5. Stuff For Her Minivan. You know how hard it is for you to summon up courage to drive the family van, right? Especially after driving your Dakota all week. Who wants to be caught driving that thing? She does! This is where you really have to die to self: give her spark plugs and spark plug wires for Christmas and leave it at that. Just kidding. Better to find the name brand auto parts she really wants: floor mats, seat covers, pet pads, etc. All the frilly little things that make her vehicle, well, her own.

Are you still not sure what she wants? Then just look. That advertisement on your workbench is open to the page for the item she wants… the one with the big, red circle around it. So, just get it and leave it at that. If you do, you’ll be singing, “peace on earth and goodwill toward men” in no time. Merry Christmas!
